As PACT’s practice consultant, John Viterito brings over four decades of experience as a professional counselor. He earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Long Island University in 1979, focusing on Cartesian rationalism and Sartrian existentialism. These philosophical foundations sparked his interest in counseling and psychotherapy. Although initially planning to pursue a doctorate in philosophy, John chose to channel his philosophical insights into helping others. While obtaining his master’s and post-master’s specialist degrees in counselor education at LIU, he was introduced to the theories of Albert Ellis and Viktor Frankl. This enabled him to integrate his undergraduate philosophical studies with practical counseling techniques.
John completed post-graduate training at the Albert Ellis Institute in NYC, earning the title "Diplomate in Rational Emotive and Cognitive-Behavior Therapy" and achieving faculty status. In 2013, he furthered his expertise by earning the Diplomate Clinician credential at the Viktor Frankl Institute and a year later became an international faculty member. His clinical interests lie in combining cognitive-behavioral practices with existential and meaning-oriented philosophy and psychotherapy.
Throughout his career, John has worked in various settings, including college mental health counseling, employee assistance programs, private practice, counseling supervision, and professional consultation for licensed professionals in psychotherapy. He is a retired adjunct professor from the Counselor Education program at Kean University, where he introduced students to Logotherapy and Existential Analysis (LTEA), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and other philosophical and cognitive approaches. John is licensed to practice in New Jersey, is a National Certified Counselor and Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (Ret.), and is an Approved Clinical Supervisor with the Center for Credentialing & Education. John is an Associate Member and Supervisor of the International Association for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (IAREBT).
